Recipe development and menu consultancy are part of her portfolio of skills.

Sonia Cabano is well-known to be a passionate champion of  local artisan producers and strives to bring the message across of living in harmony with nature, supporting and respecting the honest smaller regional producers which are writing South Africa’s culinary history and celebrating local food and wine.

She will be presenting artisanal food and wine, or beer and wine pairing workshops at Slowmarket Stellenbosch from 1 October 2011. Artisanal cookery workshops are planned from early 2012, such as cheese-making, sourdough bread baking, preserving, making condiments at home etcetera.
“I love cooking because I love life, and I love people,” Sonia says. “Making and sharing delicious food is the best way I know to celebrate the joy of being alive. Sharing food unites people and it helps us discover and honour our common values.

“South African cooking is a wonderful  expression of our lively culture, I think, a rich and powerful stream fed by many diverse tributaries – Dutch, Malay, French, German, British, Jewish, Greek, Portuguese, Indian and African. And all these tastes and flavour-accents can be clearly discerned in our own local culinary language, making South African cuisine a true polyglot with a unique and distinctive voice.”

“My approach to cooking is simple: fresh, seasonal and local, ethically produced and organic where at all possible. Use the best ingredients you can afford, and do as little as possible to them. Food should taste of itself and offer a feast to the senses.

Make 2011 your year of celebrating South Africa’s unique culinary heritage by featuring Sonia Cabano at your next event or celebration, or book a cooks’ tour and cooking class with her.
